It is an honour for me to accompany this project as EU climate pact ambassador, LDI European Director and initiator in Germany and Switzerland.
Since 2018, WCD has become one of the largest civic movements of our time, uniting volunteers from more than 190 countries across the world for a cleaner planet. On that organised cleanup day each year, we rally millions of volunteers and thousands of business and governmental partners worldwide to come together to clean up hundreds of thousand tons of litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets.
For instance, WCD on 15 September 2018 united more than 17,6 million volunteers in 157 countries; WCD on 21 September 2019 united more than 21,2 million volunteers in 180 countries; WCD on 19 September 2020 united more than 11 million volunteers in 66 countries despite severe Covid restrictions in many countries; WCD on 18 September 2021 united more than 8,5 million volunteers in 191 countries as COVID restricted mobilisation second year; volunteers on WCD on 17 September 2022 rose back to 15 million across 190 countries.
Furthermore, we also bring in partners from the highest governmental agencies to mutually enhance and implement environmental visions. With crucial supports of EU leaders such as Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, and Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the EU Commission, The momentous kick-off event of the European WCD campaign at the European House in Berlin on 15 May 2022, and the WCD flag handover to EU Parliament President Metsola in Brussels on 5 September 2022 were made possible to demonstrate our LDI grassroots movement has the region’s highest governmental endorsements and seals of approval.
By coordinating this cooperation between civil societies and governmental agencies, we believe it creates powerful messages to all levels of our societies to meet the challenges of the plastic waste in the environmental crisis. It is important that we all do our small local actions to bring about massive positive global impact. It is equally important that we all work together to tackle the challenges of the climate crisis and the plastic waste problem. WCD movement harnesses the power of people around the world to bring the acute awareness of plastic trash in our environment by doing it together on a global scale in a determined mindset – Cleaning Up.
